Diarrhea is a common problem for both human and animals; it’s easy to find if your dog is now suffering from diarrhea. If they suffer from diarrhea, the stool of the affected dog will be loose, liquid, and the dog will often go to the bathroom. Diarrhea in dogs is alarming, and it’s not a disease. The temporary conditions of this, generally affects the dog’s gastrointestinal tract (GIT).
If a dog has eaten some spoiled food, then diarrhea is a way for eliminating the source from the GIT. The first attempt of diarrhea does not need any medical attention; it is just a warning sign. If it continues, then your dog will definitely need to get some help from the vet.
The actual causes behind diarrhea in dogs: As same like the small issues like providing small bite of spoiled food to the pets to very serious cancer, there are numerous reasons for the cause of diarrhea. When your dog is dealing with diarrhea problem, it’s so important to find the causes of it and stop it from happening again.
Most of the dogs will suffer from diarrhea only when switching to a diet or taking different types of food at a time and others may due to:
- Intolerance to certain food.
- Eating garbage foods.
- Eating toxic plants or taking the other poisonous substance.
- Due to allergic reaction.
- Infection, either viral or bacterial.
- Happens due to inflammatory bowel disease.
- Disease of kidneys or liver.
- Certain medications side effects.
- Symptoms of tumor, including cancerous tumors, inside the GIT.
- Diarrhea caused due to parasites such as roundworms, coccidian, and giardia.
Parasites and infection cause diarrhea, most of the younger dogs are getting affected due to this problem. When compared to other breeds “German shepherd” is more prone to diarrhea because it has insufficient exocrine in their pancreas.
Common symptoms of dog’s diarrhea
The most common way to find symptoms of diarrhea will be the stool of the dogs that are loose and liquid. However, there are other symptoms that are also available to find that your pet could have diarrhea or not.
- Excessive flatulence.
- Mucus or blood in the stool.
- Loss of appetite.
- Loss of weight.
- Black stool, which is very serious symptoms.
Treatment for diarrhea in dogs
Fortunately, if your dog experiences diarrhea and if it clears up in a day, then there is no need of veterinary treatment for your pet. Immediately, after noting down the first symptom of diarrhea, the first step you have to do is: you must keep all the food bowls away from the reach of your dogs. After knowing that your pet suffers from diarrhea, leave them off from taking solid food for 12-14 hours. But make sure that, to give plenty of water to avoid your pet becoming dehydrated.
Providing rice water fast to the affected pet
One of the best ways to control the diarrhea is to feed your dog with rice water fast. This starch will make their intestinal track firm up and it also helps to prevent your dog from dehydration.
In order to prepare the mixture, just take 1:2 radios of rice and water, and allow them to cook for 30 minutes. After it was cooked just strain out the milky colored water and allow it to cool before feeding to your pet. This water can often be given as needed, and one important thing is to use only plain rice water.
Other general treatment
A few probiotics are good for diarrhea and for both human and domestic-animals. Yogurt is a good source of probiotics it gives a solution to reduce diarrhea to your dogs. Instead, some probiotic powder (yeast) may also available in stores. Just sprinkle few quantities into your dog’s food, or mix this powder into rice water and then serve them.
Some medications help to stop diarrhea in dogs, such as Pepto-Bismol and Imodium. These make your dogs feel better and stop or slow their diarrhea. However, without your vet recommendations you shouldn’t give this to your dog. Sometimes over feeding of this too medicine may also cause side effects to the pets.
Once your pet is again ready to take solid food, give small amounts of bland rice, and a small amount of chicken, provide baby food to the pet. Sprinkle some of the probiotics into the rice for further protection.
Going to the vet
Rice water is enough to stop diarrhea in dogs, but sometimes the problem is more serious than these remedies are suggested.
If your dogs do not show any improvement and if it continues vomiting and your pet is also losing weight very rapidly, then it’s time to take them to a vet. Obviously, only a vet could find everything and identifies what could be affecting or causing diarrhea. First, the vet will check for is a sign of dehydration, as this is common in dogs suffering from diarrhea. After that, the vet makes sure if their internal part has any toxins or pathogens.
The vet will like to take several tests to find the causes of diarrhea. The tests such as blood test, radiographs, ultrasound, cultures, endoscopies, and biopsies. A stool sample can also be taken for a test to find the presence of parasites.
Most of the pet owners will be very eager to know how to prevent diarrhea from dogs? Probably there are few things available to prevent your pet from diarrhea as follows:
- Provide dogs vaccination up to date at all times. This will help to remove parasites from the dog’s body to make them healthy and happy forever.
- Get an idea from the vet how to keep your dog free from parasites.
- Close all the garbage tightly; eating garbage food is the one of the main reason for diarrhea.
- Always keep eye on your dog. Because they get a chance to have something toxic that will upset their GI tract.
- Never allow them to eat their own stool or from another animal.
- Keep your dog always relaxed, comfortable, and responsible for giving secure environment.
Sudden diarrhea in dogs can be very frightening, while in the first time it’s not usually anything too serious, it automatically goes away within 24 hours, if not immediately consult a vet.
